Recognizing Substance Abuse in the Workplace: Key Signs to Watch For
Substance abuse in the workplace is a very serious issue. Employees with substance abuse issues not only present a danger to themselves, they can seriously impact the safety of all workers on a site. The key to ensuring workplace safety is in learning to recognize the signs of abuse.
There are four general areas which may indicate that an employee may have a substance abuse problem. While none of these, either alone or in combination, are proof that a worker is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, an employee who presents with a number of indicators would warrant further investigation.
Performance: An employee with an abuse problem may show work performance problems. Things to look for are excessive or unexplained absenteeism or tardiness; degrading work quality; decreases in productivity and an increase in missed deadlines.
Substance Abuse Facilities: Who Says Money and Fame Won’t Get You What You Want?
Question by Littlemswright: Who says money and fame won’t get you what you want?
LOS ANGELES – Music legend Phil Spector has been assigned to a “sensitive needs facility” in California’s largest state prison to serve his sentence for murdering an actress.
Spector was taken Monday to the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran, where 6,919 other inmates are housed, corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said.
She said Spector was assigned to the sensitive needs facility rather than general population. He doesn’t have a cellmate.
As a medium security inmate, Spector can make some requests for items he wants in his cell, and his wife acknowledges her husband is already creating a list.
“He wants a TV and an iPod or something like that for listening to music,” Rachelle Spector said Tuesday. “And he would like to be able to receive e-mail.”

Bringing Awareness to Substance Abuse, Alcoholism, Obesity and Eating Disorders
Tens of millions of sufferers aged 12 or older need treatment for a substance abuse or eating disorder in the United States, and their families are also affected by these afflictions. Many people do not understand that drug addiction, alcoholism, and eating disorders are treatable diseases, and this misconception can keep people from getting help.
To help overcome barriers to long-term recovery, there are several programs in place that increase public awareness about substance abuse and eating disorders. What families can do to help themselves and loved ones is the goal of several programs sponsored by public and private organizations. Educating people about the positive effect that treatment and recovery can have on sufferers and the well-being of our communities, and celebrating people in recovery – and those who help them, is important.
