12 Step Programs and Other Approaches to Drug Addiction and Alcohol Recovery

Twelve step programs or alcoholics anonymous are usually associated with the successful approach to stop addiction on an outpatient basis. However, there are some other approaches and groups such as women for sobriety and smart that may click better depending on your personal history and orientation. For some people, the spiritual orientation within AA is problematical. People may have had a crisis in life, feel they’ve never gotten a break or choose a totally different philosophical orientation. It doesn’t make sense to be uncomfortable and alienated in a support group. Down the road, a person may find that spirituality does click for them and may choose at that point to join a 12 step program such as aa or narcotics anonymous. Feeling like an outsider in a meeting makes it difficult to advance. If you live in a small town, you may not find some of the alternative programs in your area, but there are some wonderful support groups on yahoo groups, Google groups and elsewhere on the web.

In psychotherapy, there are various ways people heal through using approaches such as behavioral therapy, ego psychology, tough love or humanistic psychology. For addiction, this is true as well. Some people benefit well with a medication management program, others do well with self-confidence boosting approaches and still others can recover via a strong religious healing program. There is no one approach that fits all. We each bring our unique history and perspective to life.

If you are looking for treatment for yourself, know there is an approach that will help you stop the addiction and substance abuse habits. If you are looking for a child or spouse that has a drinking problem or drug issue think about their personality. What makes them feel comfortable? Do they respond better to a tough approach or a gentle approach? Did they enjoy church or temple at one time in their life? What speaks to them?
