Treatment Program for Addicted Teens Unveiled in Brockton
Treatment program for addicted teens unveiled in Brockton
The Enterprise BROCKTON —Each week for years, Carol Kowalski would get phone call after phone call from desperate parents looking to get drug addicted teens into treatment. And each time, Kowalski would give the same answer: there was no in-patient state program for addicted adolescents. But now, with the opening of a new program in Brockton, Kowalski, site director of the Brockton Addiction Center for adults, will be able to give a different answer. High Point Treatment Center Thursday unveiled a 26-bed substance abuse treatment program for 13-to 17-year-olds on Meadowbrook Road, one of two in the state. “This is a huge milestone for us,” said Carolyn Castro Donlan, director of the office of Youth and Young Adults with the Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services. “It provides new resources for youth and families that has not existed for families before here.” Joseph Shrand, the program’s medical director, said the teens will stay in the program between two and four followed by additional outpatient care.
Substance Abuse Education: In Her Work “Uncle Sam’s Plantation” Star Parker Compares the Government to a Plantation. Is She Right?
Question by Reagan Republican: In her work “Uncle Sam’s Plantation” Star Parker compares the government to a plantation. Is she right?
Is the comparison valid?
Six years ago I wrote a book called Uncle Sam’s Plantation. I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it.
I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas — a poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.
I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps.
A vast sea of perhaps well-intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960s by Democrats, that were going to lift the nation’s poor out of poverty.
