In The United States testosterone and related substances including methyltestosterone, fluoxymesterone, and oxandrolone are federally controlled schedule III substances.
According to the DEA “Substances in this schedule have a potential for abuse less than substances in schedules I or II and abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence.” Other examples of schedule III controlled substances include opioids such as Vicodin (hydrocodone/acetaminophen), Tylenol #3 (acetaminophen/codeine), Subutex (buprenorphine), and Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) along with non-amphetamine stimulants sometimes prescribed for weight loss and include Didrex (benzphetamine) and Bontril (phendimetrazine), barbiturates like Sodium Pentothal (sodium thiopental), and other drugs including ketamine.
In Canada testosterone is a schedule G (CDSA IV) class drug making it less controlled than it is in America.
Here are a number of brand name medications with testosterone or a related substance:
Androderm (testosterone transdermal), Android (methyltestosterone), Testim (testosterone topical), Testred (methyltestosterone), Depo-Testosterone (testosterone cypionate), Striant (testosterone), Oxandrin (oxandrolone), AndroGel (testosterone topical), Axiron (testosterone topical), and Fortesta (testosterone topical).
