Question by Seeker Of Painful Truths 2: Do people use the term “addiction” as a way to control people to do as they desire?
I ask because it would seem to me that based on what experts say, “addiction” is bad for you. Yet when ever the word “addiction” pops up, people usually use it like this below:

– PORN addition is bad
– DRUG addiction is bad
– ALCOHOL addiction is bad

None of that make any sense to me because I thought it is “ADDICTION” itself that’s bad. If thats true then why the need to specifically point out what kind of addiction it is? It should matter what the addiction is because the problem is “addiction” itself.

I think that people have clouded the term addiction so much that it’s meaningless. I think when people have a real problem like alcohol addiction or what ever, the core problem isn’t that they are heavily into alcohol, but that they are seriously UNBALANCED.    Read more...

To me, an “addiction” to gambling seems like a lame excuse for blowing one’s money away. I can see somebody being addicted to alcohol or smoking because it has physical effects on the body, but gambling…?

Gambling has the same physical effects on the body almost that drinking or smoking has. I’m not talking about the effects on the liver or other secondary organs I’m talking about the most important organ in your body. Your brain, gambling works on the same chemicals that make you feel good that drinking and smoking or that drugs do. You’re not understanding the stimulus that one can get from things out side of ones’ self. When you look at a great piece of Art or a beautiful sun set and you feel good, that feeling starts from the outside and causes an increase in serotonin which is the feel good chemical in your brain. Question by IIIIIIIIII: AM I the only one who thinks video game addiciton is not real?
For some reason I believe that video game addiction is not real. I believe that it is the newest scapegoat to go to and to point fingers at when something is bad. A comon thing I hear “IF you can get addicted to video games you can get addicted to anything.” Um, no not really. Currently VG addiction does not exist in the DSM. Here is a list of reasons why I think they are not real
1. Kids would rather play video games than do homework.
I hear this one a lot. I would hear from people “These children are neglecting their homework or adults are nneglectingtheir work to play video games.” Well, no matter who you are or what job you have. Doing homework and school work sucks
2. VIdeo games make people anti social. Um, no. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Video games don’t make people anti social it is the persons choice
3. You can get bored of video games. Just like a book or a movie. People often get bored of video games and would probably move on to something else for a while after they are bored
4. We don’t say television is addicting or books are addicting. We believe that these are normal hobbies or aactivity’speople do and none questions that.
5. There might be some underlying problem. People with so called “Video Game Addiction” might have some other problem like depression or some other case that they have.
6. Parents use video games as a babysiter than go complain. I believe that some parents would use VGs as a baby sitter and then when they find out that they have been playing for 72 hours or something they would go and blame the video games for its fault. Not the parents who let their kid play for so long.
There was recently a video game addiction clinic that opened up a few years ago who closed its doors because they thought that video games arn’t the problem. But it might be some other problem that people have.

I gamble almost 100 percent of my paycheck away. I have sold almost everyone and have hit an all time low i dont even feel like typing this out i need help so please help

sorry but more info is needed. If your really in this deep – posting on a board and having someone say you should quit – prolly won’t do you much good.

telling you it cant be beaten is prolly going to fall on deaf ears as well.

I don’t know if you are willing to go to meetings or not, some people that is not their cup of tea. It stinks being an adult asking to be monitored like a child but when you know you can’t control yourself, try giving your money to someone – don’t keep cash on you.    Read more...

how exactly do they present the idea of making a documentary to the addict? Obviously a family member or friend contacts the show, but I wonder how they actually do it.

Does a family member/friend just say “Oh someone is making a documentary and you get paid for it etc.”

Anyone out there who knows?
