Alcohol Addiction Treatments: Does Anyone Know the Origin of the Saying to “Quit Cold Turkey”?

Question by Lemonada: Does anyone know the origin of the saying to “quit cold turkey”?
I just don’t get it.

cold turkey
Origin: 1922

By 1922, cold turkey was not always a leftover from Thanksgiving dinner. For an addict, it was quite the opposite. “This method of sudden withdrawall,” explained a writer that year, “is described in the jargon of the jail as ‘the cold turkey’ treatment,” It meant “to immediately and completely give up a substance, such as narcotics or alcohol, to which one was addicted.”

The shock to the system was such that few addicts voluntarily chose it. “Mention of the ‘cold turkey treatment’ gives a chill of horror to a drug addict,” said Newsweek in 1933. “It means being thrown in jail with his drug supply completely cut off.” And Mickey Spillane wrote in I, the Jury (1947), “I doubt if you can comprehend what it means to one addicted to narcotics to go ‘cold turkey’ as they call it.”

My Mother has been taking Methadone for some time and she needs help..She get’s weekly amounts and then takes to muchj and then go through withdrawls. But when she does have it she mixes it with other opiates. Whatever she can get her hands on ….HELP..She is so messed up? What do I do? What are the sider effects of methadone and opiates together …then going through withdrawl because she takes to much methadone when she gets her weekly doses?

That’s a surprisingly common pattern, and I dare say methadone clinics are nothing but money making machines for many of their patients. There are methadone users who’ve been “in treatment” for decades. All that to say, some people genuinely intend to utilize it for weaning off and away from opioids. An ethical treatment center would call her on her misuse, but since it’s often part of the addiction, kicking her out would also be the wrong thing to do.

How Do You “Move on” After Breaking Your Resolutions Yet Again?

Question by MeaCulpa: How do you “move on” after breaking your resolutions yet again?
Mine involved smoking, coffee, avoiding processed foods and more. Currently I’m functioning with all my “addictions” well satisfied and feel like a failure on this level. From past experience when I live with this negative feeling it’s completely counter productive to any success in fact my appetite for these things increases. I know I need to lighten up and not beat myself up but that’s a challenge right now.
Thanks so much for any insight!

In Ben Franklin’s “twelve virtues (plus one)” number 4 is resolution. He says, “Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.” Try again and if you keep failing you might consider just not making New Year’s resolutions.
