Alternative Addiction Treatment: How Do Know When an Alcoholic Is Sincerely Asking for Help?

Question by goldengirl_45701: How do know when an alcoholic is sincerely asking for help?
I have a long time alcoholic friend who has really gone downhill. His dr said he only has 2 years left to live. He recently reached out to me that he’s miserable and wants help but when I offered to take him to a detox or rehab he finds an excuse. I get the impression he just wants attention. I’ve already taken him to AA. He said that “ain’t it.” I try not to give him too much attention for it but what if he really means it one time? How do you know the difference? I can’t do an intervention, he surrounds himself with drinkers and they all want him to keep drinking with them.

If he is not willing to make changes then he is not really going to change. You have to decide how much you can take of his self serving behavior. If he really wanted to stop drinking he would be willing to give an honest try to rehab or AA. If he is unwilling to do 30 meetings in 30 days and just sit there for an hour with his ears open and his mouth shut, oh, and sober, then he is not sincere about getting well.
