Love Addiction Treatment: Treating the Incurable Love Addict
The human as a species is a ball of emotions. Most emotions have their up sides and the opposites and each emotion seems almost measurable on a scale. Each individual at some stage will experience the emotions of joy and sadness. Now the joy might range from a mild sense of happiness to total ecstasy, Its converse may just be a mild sense of regret or sadness or it could be a total and devastating sense of grief and loss.
The same is obviously true of other emotions Anger, envy, anxiety, fear, contempt, loathing, liking, desire, lust and the list goes on…. Anger could range from a mild grumpiness to out and out blind fury, anxiety and fear could range from mild nervousness to catatonic terror.
Some have emotions well under control while others are ruled by them. The environment, growth, upbringing and learned responses determine how each and every one of us react in any given set of circumstances. One of the emotions most of us have little control over is the emotion of love.
Love itself is a highly complex and ill defined subject even though it is one of the most talked about, written about, sung about, mourned and mooned over subjects in human relationships. The English language also uses the word sloppily using the same word to describe love of chocolate and ice cream, Patriotism as in love of country, Familial love as in love of one’s parents and siblings and children as well as sexual love as in making love although emotions may not be that fixed. And of course it is principally meant to define the feeling of emotion that passes between two people.
True love is fairly mature involving aspects defined in Greek philosophy as ‘Agape’; The unconditional and unquestioning sense of regard for the object of one’s affection, ‘Filio’; the actual liking of another and wishing them well, ‘Affinite’; the desire to share the same space and ‘Eros’ which is the fun part including obviously the sexual sharing.
Well if one is “Addicted to love” this is not typically what one is feeling. Usually a person who is addicted to love falls in love very quickly and then obsesses about the loved one often to the exclusion of all else. The addiction is real in that they achieve a big high which is often followed by a severe low when their love is unrequited. (See the poem “La Belle dam sans merci” written by Keats describing just such a situation)
There are a whole list of symptoms of Love Addiction such as being dependent on relationships, having many failed relationships with inappropriate people, smothering ones partner, extreme jealousy, always needing to be in a relationship and so on.
