I’m not a Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC), but they do need to get extensive clinical experience with an actual patient caseload (and passing a certification exam) before possibly getting a job as a CAC.
A lot of CACs are in recovery (from addiction) themselves. I believe that most CACs have a master’s degree in counseling or social work in addition to the certification in addiction counseling.
The professional organization “the association for addiction professionals” has more info re: certification and such: http://www.naadac.org/certification/credentials-a-endorsements
For more general info re: “substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors”: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/substance-abuse-and-behavioral-disorder-counselors.htm and can click on any of the headings for the various categories.
With regard to schooling for addiction counseling (or any course of study), please *avoid* those For-profit schools such as kaplan, argosy, strayer, everest, capella, ashworth, devry, grand canyon, penn foster, ashford, keiser, ITT tech, regis, university of phoenix, pima medical, excelsior, walden, colorado tech, stratford career, westwood and others. Their course credits usually do NOT transfer to other schools.
